land acknowledgment

Matter of Fat is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota which exists on the occupied and unceded territory of the Dakota people who have been stewards of this land, along with the Anishinabe people, from time immemorial. We recognize the nearby, sovereign tribal nations of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, Shokopee Mdewakanton, Prairie Island, and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. We also acknowledge that our metro region has the third largest indigenous population in the occupied United States of America.

It’s important for us to name the lasting impacts of colonization, trauma, and systems of oppression that began with European settler arrival in the 17th century. Land acknowledgements do not exist in a past tense, or historical context. Colonialism is a current, ongoing process. We hope you will consider the history that has brought us to reside on stolen land and to seek to understand our place within that history. Wherever you live, we encourage you to find out whose land you’re occupying and consider ways to redistribute wealth and resources.

Thank you!
